History of the fixture

The absolute peak of their animosity occurred during the 1970 FA Cup Final, which required a replay and remains legendary as the most notoriously physical fixture in English history.

• The Brutality: Across both matches (a 2-2 draw at Wembley and Chelsea's 2-1 extra-time win at Old Trafford), players traded flying kicks, punches, and headbutts. The rivalry quieted significantly after the 1990s due to effective anti-hooliganism measures and Leeds United’s financial collapse and subsequent relegation from the Premier League in 2004. For 16 years, the two sides barely played one another.

The fire was rekindled when Leeds returned to the top flight in 2020. While the modern matches are much strictly policed and far less violent on the pitch, fans on both sides still greet the fixture with immense hostility. In their most recent high-stakes meeting, Chelsea narrowly defeated Leeds 1–0 in the FA Cup Semi-Final.

If this was the team for Wednesday Farke will have plenty of choice from the bench if things don't go to plan with Calvert Lewin, Anton Stach, Dan James and Noah Oakfor coming off the bench.

Injury Reports

Chelsea: 

Moises Caicedo(Doubtful): Manager Xabi Alonso admitted he rushed the Ecuadorian back too early from a nagging knock for a brief substitute appearance against Brighton, and he subsequently missed Sunday's 2–1 league defeat to Arsenal. Alonso stated he will not risk exacerbating the injury on Wednesday.

Marco Palestra (Out): The summer signing remains sidelined with a training-ground knock and has yet to feature this season.

Jordan Henderson (Out): Still recovering from a broken wrist suffered post-World Cup and lacks match fitness.

Levi Colwill (Available): The defender was only fit enough for the bench against Arsenal but is back in contention to start.

Leeds United:

Joe Rodon (Out):The Welsh defender is a massive loss for Daniel Farke, having suffered a serious hamstring injury against Brentford that will keep him out for up to 10 weeks.

Gabriel Gudmundsson (Available): In a major boost, the left-sided player successfully completed 90 minutes over the weekend upon his return from injury and is ready for selection. (Could be rested for this game ahead of next Monday's clash against Newcastle).
