What a night of football!

Chelsea and Leeds United produced an absolute thriller in the Carabao Cup, with nine goals, huge momentum swings, questionable decisions, tactical battles and a second-half attacking masterclass from the Blues.

Chelsea eventually came out on top 6-3, but the final score doesn’t tell the whole story.

For large parts of the first half, Leeds looked capable of causing a major upset. Chelsea controlled possession early on and looked the more dangerous side, but Leeds’ physicality and threat from set pieces gradually started to cause problems.

Then came one of the most dramatic second halves you’re likely to see.

A Scrappy Start

The opening stages were certainly feisty.

Chelsea dominated possession during the early exchanges, attempting to stretch Leeds by attacking down the flanks. Leeds, meanwhile, maintained a disciplined defensive shape and refused to give Chelsea easy opportunities through the middle.

Chelsea’s wide players were beginning to identify the space, particularly against Leeds’ wing-backs, while Reggie Watson looked composed in the defensive midfield role despite the occasion.

The first big moment came when Chelsea nearly broke through on the counter, only for James Justin to make an excellent block and prevent a clear shot.

Leeds were struggling to create much themselves. Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson were finding it difficult to get behind Chelsea’s full-backs, while Nmecha wasn’t receiving enough service.

At that stage, Chelsea looked like the team most likely to score.

But Leeds had another weapon.

Physicality.

Leeds Strike First

On 21 minutes, Leeds finally created a major opening.

A long ball into the Chelsea penalty area caused chaos. Harry Wilson’s effort was saved by Penders, before the loose ball fell for Leeds again.

The follow-up header looked destined to loop over the goalkeeper, but Penders somehow managed to get a hand to it and tip the ball over.

It was a warning.

Just two minutes later, Leeds made Chelsea pay.

23’ — Leeds United 1-0 Chelsea

A corner was delivered into the box and Tarik rose brilliantly to power a header into the Chelsea net.

Leeds were ahead.

It was a goal that perfectly demonstrated the physical advantage Leeds had developed.

Chelsea had looked better with the ball, but Leeds had found a weakness.

The momentum immediately shifted.

Leeds began riding the wave, while Chelsea struggled to regain their composure.

Dan James and Harry Wilson combined brilliantly shortly afterwards, eventually creating another opening which saw Sean Longstaff fire over the bar.

By the half-hour mark, the statistics made uncomfortable reading for Chelsea.

Leeds had enjoyed more than 70% possession during that spell, while Chelsea had failed to register a shot in the previous ten minutes.

Could Chelsea’s youthful side cope with the pressure?

Half-Time: Chelsea Need More Quality

Chelsea gradually recovered before half-time and began creating opportunities again, but sloppy moments in the final third prevented them from finding the equaliser.

Chelsea had been the better team when in possession, but Leeds had been more effective where it mattered.

For Leeds, the message was simple:

Don’t sit back.

They had the physical advantage, they were dangerous from set pieces and Chelsea were struggling to deal with their pressure.

But Chelsea had something Leeds hadn’t yet seen.

The big guns.

Xavi Changes Everything

Chelsea made a huge statement at half-time.

Cole Palmer, Reece James, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto were introduced.

Suddenly, the attacking quality on the pitch changed completely.

And it didn’t take long for the impact to be felt.

47’ — Leeds Make It 2-0

Just three minutes into the second half, Leeds delivered another blow.

A free-kick was sent into the Chelsea area and the Blues were sloppy defensively.

Ethan Ampadu reached the byline before cutting the ball back.

Nmecha produced an outrageous no-look pass into the path of Brenden Aaronson, who smashed the ball past Penders.

Chelsea 0-2 Leeds.

Chelsea were stunned.

Surely Leeds were now in complete control?

Not quite.

The Cole Palmer Show

Then came the turning point.

⚽ 52’ — Cole Palmer 2-1

Chelsea were awarded a penalty after Dan James appeared to step on Pep Chavarria's standing foot while attempting to block the cross.

It was a controversial decision, and one that certainly divided opinion.

But Chelsea didn’t care.

Cole Palmer stepped up.

He smashed the penalty past Zetterer.

And suddenly, Chelsea believed.

One minute later, they were level.

54’ — Cole Palmer 2-2

Palmer picked up the ball on the right side outside the penalty area.

What followed was pure quality.

He curled the ball towards goal and, with Zetterer seemingly unable to react, it found the net.

2-2.

Chelsea had gone from two goals down to level in the space of just two minutes.

The momentum had completely changed.

Pedro Neto Turns It Around

59’ — Chelsea 3-2 Leeds

Chelsea were now unstoppable.

A midfield scramble eventually broke Chelsea’s way, with Palmer involved once again before setting up Pedro Neto.

Neto arrived from the right and curled an outstanding effort into the corner, with the ball kissing the inside of the post on its way in.

Leeds had no answers.

They couldn’t string together three or four passes.

They couldn’t escape Chelsea’s pressure.

And Chelsea’s attacking quality was completely overwhelming them.

This was where the tactical battle became fascinating.

Xavi had acted. Daniel Farke hadn’t.

Welbeck Makes It Four

64’ — Chelsea 4-2 Leeds

Chelsea’s attacking wave continued.

The ball arrived from the right and Danny Welbeck showed tremendous composure.

Rather than rushing his finish, Welbeck took another touch, moved the ball away from the falling Leeds defender and then powered his effort beyond Zetterer.

4-2 Chelsea.

Leeds finally made changes, but the question was obvious:

Had they waited too long?

Chelsea In Complete Control

Chelsea were now playing with freedom.

Fast passing.

Fluid movement.

Constant pressure.

Palmer, Neto and Rogers were causing enormous problems, while Welbeck and Pedro were benefiting from the quality of service around them.

It was a completely different Chelsea from the first half.

Xavi’s decision to introduce four players at the break had transformed the game.

74’ — Leeds Fight Back

Just when it looked like Leeds were finished, they found another lifeline.

A rare Leeds attack saw Okafor drive down the left before pulling the ball back across the box.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin arrived perfectly and fired beyond Penders.

Chelsea 4-3 Leeds.

Suddenly, the impossible didn’t look quite so impossible.

Chelsea’s defence had looked fragile throughout the match and Leeds’ physical approach was still causing problems.

Could Leeds somehow complete an extraordinary comeback of their own?

Barto Delivers

79’ — Chelsea 5-3 Leeds

No.

Chelsea had another answer.

Morgan Rogers worked his way into an excellent position on the right before delivering a dangerous cross.

The ball travelled all the way across the penalty area.

Waiting at the back post was Barto.

He made no mistake.

5-3 Chelsea.

Leeds’ hopes of completing the comeback had been dealt another huge blow.

Chelsea See It Out

Leeds continued to push.

Gudmundsson produced an excellent run which created an opportunity for Anton Stach, but his effort was blocked.

Chelsea were beginning to slow the game down, controlling possession and taking the sting out of Leeds’ attacks.

The final minutes became a case of Chelsea managing the clock.

Both defences had shown weaknesses throughout the match, particularly when faced with high-quality attacking players.

That will certainly be something both managers need to address.

93’ — Welbeck Makes It Six!

And because this match hadn’t already produced enough drama, Chelsea added a sixth.

Barto fired from outside the box and the effort looked like it was heading wide.

Then it struck Danny Welbeck in the head.

The deflection somehow redirected the ball towards goal.

Into the net.

Chelsea 6-3 Leeds United.

What a way to finish an incredible cup tie.

Nine goals.

A two-goal Leeds lead.

A Chelsea comeback.

A controversial penalty.

Two Palmer goals.

A Neto stunner.

A Welbeck brace.

And a fantastic performance from Barto.

This was everything you want from a cup tie.

Chelsea — What We Learned

Chelsea showed enormous character.

They were struggling at 2-0 down, but the decision to introduce Palmer, Reece James, Rogers and Neto completely changed the game.

The quality of those attacking players was simply too much for Leeds to handle.

Xavi deserves huge credit for recognising that the game needed changing and acting immediately.

The big question now is whether Chelsea can produce that level of attacking quality consistently.

If they can, a top-four finish — and potentially even a title challenge — shouldn’t be dismissed.

However, the defensive performance will concern them.

Chelsea conceded three goals and looked vulnerable whenever Leeds managed to get the ball into dangerous areas.

Leeds United — Plenty To Build On

Despite the defeat, Leeds shouldn’t leave this match completely disappointed.

They scored three goals away from home, showed tremendous physicality and demonstrated that they can cause Chelsea serious problems.

Their set-piece threat was excellent, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal showed the danger they possess when they get runners into the box.

But Daniel Farke will surely look back at the period between 2-1 and 4-2 with frustration.

Chelsea were building momentum, yet Leeds didn’t react quickly enough.

Against a team with that much attacking quality, you simply cannot allow the game to become an open shootout.

Chelsea looked down and out at half-time.

Leeds looked like they had everything under control.

But football can change in an instant.

Four half-time substitutions later, Chelsea produced an attacking explosion that Leeds simply couldn’t live with.
